Round carpets are an Indo-Persian eccentricity. They appear in the inventories of Mughal palaces, where circular pavilions and octagonal garden rooms required a floor that obeyed the architecture, and they continued in the Agra workshops well into the British period. The Agra tradition emerged in the seventeenth century around the imperial city and developed a particular style: floral classicism with restrained palettes, often centred on ivory grounds with gold and indigo accents. This round carpet belongs to that lineage.

This 8' round (244 cm diameter) was knotted by three weavers across six months on a custom circular loom. The challenge of weaving a round shape is geometric. Each row is a different length, and the cartoon has to be redrawn for the curvature so the floral pattern resolves cleanly at every radius. New Zealand wool was used on a cotton foundation, dyed in the traditional vegetable palette before knotting began.

The composition

A soft ivory ground with a central rosette that radiates outward in concentric bands of palmette and vine. The gold appears in the central medallion and in a single guard band at the rim. Indigo and faded rust accent the floral structure. The colour temperature is warm, biased toward parchment and bone rather than blue-white. As the rug ages over its first decade, the ivory will deepen toward cream and the gold will mellow into honey.

Round Agra-tradition carpets of this scale rarely surface at auction; when they do, they command between $5,000 and $9,000 at houses like Skinner or Rippon Boswell because the geometry of weaving them makes the labour disproportionate to the square footage. The retail MSRP on this piece sits in that range. Hand-knotted wool of this quality continues to gain depth and lustre with use rather than depreciating.

An 8' round carpet is for octagonal entry halls, central rotundas under chandeliers, circular dining rooms with a round table, and turret rooms in older buildings. It can also work below a round pedestal table in a library. Place it on bare wood floors so the curve reads cleanly against the rectilinear floorboards. The ivory and gold pair with walnut, brass, and pale plaster walls.

Conservation

Rotate a quarter turn each season so the wear pattern does not concentrate where furniture sits. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Round rugs need slightly more careful edge treatment because the perimeter has no straight binding to anchor the wear; have the rim inspected by a conservator every five years. A full hand wash every six to eight years will keep the ivory ground clean.
