Agra carpets occupy a singular place in the wider Persian and Indian tradition because they sit at the intersection of court patronage and refined commercial production. The motifs draw on Persian precedent, the colour palette draws on Mughal painting, and the technical execution holds to the standards the imperial workshops set in the seventeenth century. What this rug carries into a current interior is the inheritance of that practice.

The loom carried 2 weavers for 4 months of continuous work. Each row of knots was pressed with a steel comb, the pile sheared row by row to keep the surface flat. The cotton foundation was warped under tension calculated so the rug lays flat without curling at the edges. The rug is offered in a beige and brown register, made in India.

The composition

Colour holds in the beige and brown register. The geometry reads as a single composed surface rather than a stack of repeating motifs. Long-staple wool gives the pile a slow lustre that deepens once the rug has settled into a room and the foot traffic has begun to polish the high points. The colour shifts very slightly between dye lots within the same field, the abrash that connoisseurs read as the signature of plant pigment rather than synthetic. Pairs well with linen, leather, walnut, and oak. Pairs less well with strongly patterned upholstery, where the rug expects to be the dominant graphic element in the room.

The piece in a room

At the format here the rug suits a study, a smaller drawing room, or a primary bedroom. The composition pairs with mid-tone walls and warm wood furniture, and rises against off-white walls as a fielded ground. The size also works as the entry rug for a longer hall, with the pattern reading as one walks across it.

Conservation

Turn the rug a half rotation twice a year. Vacuum with suction only, no rotating brush, on the lowest practical setting. Spills are blotted with cotton, never scrubbed. A hand-wash by a wool-experienced cleaner every five to seven years restores the lustre that household dust slowly dulls. With proper care the rug runs a century. A felt or wool pad underneath protects the foundation from hard floors and adds a softness underfoot that the pile alone does not provide.
