The Agra court ateliers were the highest-paid carpet workshops in Mughal India during the seventeenth century, and the records of Akbar's establishment list the master weavers among the most senior craftsmen at court. The design vocabulary they laid down, soft floral repeats, restrained borders, palettes built on ochre and bone rather than the saturated red of the Persian school, has been the reference grammar for the Indian high-end trade ever since. A buyer looking for a carpet that pairs with antique walnut furniture, with grey-painted joinery, with linen upholstery, returns to this tradition.

Three weavers shared the loom for about five months in India. Around 2.4 million asymmetric knots laid against cotton warps in hand-spun New Zealand wool. The palette runs through gold, deep beige, walnut, and a faint madder rose. The piece was finished with a slow tea wash that flattens new-wool brightness into the antiqued surface the Agra style requires, then sheared back by hand with long shears to expose the slight irregularity that distinguishes hand-spun yarn from machine-spun.

The composition

The gold reading carries the field with a measured warmth. An all-over floral pattern, evenly distributed, no central medallion, with the border framing the composition in a single deep band. Over the next decade the beige will warm toward bone, the gold will soften toward antique brass, and the rose accents will fade toward terracotta. The wool carries an internal patina that pure-wool carpets in this tradition develop only after fifty or sixty years on a floor.

What you are buying

Antique Agra carpets in 8' x 10' format with comparable construction trade at western auction in the range of $25,000 to $50,000 when they appear at all. This is a contemporary weaving on hand-built looms, in hand-spun wool, by weavers trained in the Indian floor-loom apprenticeship. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The MSRP figure is calibrated to the auction comparable, not to a Western dealer mark-up.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary bedroom under the bed and side tables, or a medium living area with a six-seat sofa above it. The gold and beige palette settles into rooms with linen upholstery, walnut floors, and chalk or oat walls. Pairs with brass lighting, mid-tone wood furniture, and watercolour or graphite art rather than high-contrast oil.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year so light and foot traffic age the carpet evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care the carpet runs three generations on a floor.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
