Mughal floral carpets developed in the imperial workshops of north India during the seventeenth century, working from Persian templates but loosening the geometry into the looser, more naturalistic flora that Mughal painting had made its own. Lotus, palmette, and vine were drawn larger, set against quieter grounds, and given room to breathe across an ivory field. The piece in front of you is a contemporary weaving in that older drawing language, with the same restraint and the same insistence on a generous ground.
Three weavers shared the loom for about six months. The wool is hand-spun and dyed in small batches with vegetable pigments, pile knotted against a vertical cotton warp at a density tight enough to hold the curve of every petal. Total knot count runs to roughly two and a half million, every one tied by feel.
The composition
An ivory ground, the colour of old vellum, holds a scrolling vine in muted gold. The border carries a wider band of palmette and rosette in tones that shift from honey to old brass depending on the angle of light. Vegetable dye produces this kind of slow tonal drift across a single colour and is the reason a hand-knotted gold reads as a living surface rather than a flat field. The composition is built around restraint. Every centimetre of ivory is doing as much work as the gold figures on top of it.
What you are buying
Antique Mughal floral pieces of comparable scale and condition sell at international auction in the range of twenty-five to fifty thousand dollars. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, in the same fibre, on the same kind of loom. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The ivory will warm into bone, the gold will deepen, and the rug will be more itself in twenty years than it is on the day it arrives.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) suits a formal living room with a long sofa and a pair of armchairs floating on the pile, or a dining setting under a ten-seat table. Mid-tone walls in clay, pale ochre, or warm grey hold the ivory. Daylight is the rug's best friend; vegetable dye reveals its full range only under indirect natural light.
Conservation
Rotate the rug one hundred and eighty degrees each spring and autumn. Vacuum twice a week, suction only, beater bar off. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth working inward. Hand wash by a wool conservator every five years. Cared for this way, the rug runs eighty years and outlives its first owner.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
