Agra carpets, in the seventeenth-century Mughal sense of the word, were the floor pieces commissioned by the imperial workshops to lie under the throne and the audience pavilions. Floral tendrils, angular vines, palmettes, and stars filled the field. The drawing was finer than village work and the colour palette was darker and more architectural. The Indian Agra revival of the nineteenth century kept that vocabulary alive in workshops that still operate today.

This 6' x 9' carpet was hand-knotted in India by two weavers over roughly five months. Hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, vegetable-dye-compatible yarn batched against a master cartoon. The black ground is unusual in the Agra idiom and demands very tight dye control; over-saturation kills the field, under-saturation reads gray rather than black. The drawing above the black uses the classical Agra vocabulary of tendrils and palmettes in restrained ivory, ochre, and faded red.

The composition

A black ground, drawn over with floral tendrils, angular vine work, and rosette repeats. The black absorbs light, so the drawing reads as a luminous embroidery floating on a dark field rather than as a flat pattern. With age the black will warm slightly toward graphite and the ivory will mellow toward bone. The result is the most architectural of the classical Agra effects.

What you are buying

Antique Agra carpets with comparable drawing and condition trade at international auction in the range of $15,000 to $40,000 depending on size and provenance. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, with the same vocabulary. As floor work in a household it appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the wool patinas, the drawing settles, and the black warms.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is a scaled drawing-room rug for a flat or a smaller principal room in a house. The black ground pairs with cream and bone walls, brass lighting, walnut, and oxidised iron. It reads serious in a study, formal in a sitting room, and quiet against the warm wood floors of a traditional Indian house.

Conservation

Half-turn rotation each spring and autumn. Vacuum on suction, weekly, beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and follow with a barely damp one. The black ground does not show staining as readily as a lighter ground but still benefits from prompt attention. Specialist hand-wash every five to seven years. The piece will run eighty to a hundred years with reasonable care.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
