The carpet vocabulary of the Afghan tradition sits between tribal and workshop weaving. It uses hand-spun wool that takes vegetable dye unevenly and beautifully, and pattern languages that lean on repeated geometry rather than central medallions. The cartoon here borrows from that lineage.

2 weavers shared the loom for 5 months. Asymmetric Persian knotting, every node tied by feel against the warp. Wool for the pile, drawn for its long staple and the way it holds colour through years of foot traffic. The dyes were prepared from madder root, indigo, walnut hull, and oak gall, each one matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered.

The composition

The palette: neutral cream and stone. Repeated geometry across the field with the small irregularities that mark hand-spun yarn taking dye unevenly. Over time the saturations soften, the contrasts ease, and the rug develops the patina that distinguishes a long-lived hand-knotted piece from a printed reproduction.

What you are buying

A hand-knotted carpet in this lineage, woven on a cotton foundation in wool pile. Pieces in this idiom are made for the long term: they shed slightly in the first weeks, settle into the floor over the first year, and gather patina over decades. The rug sits in the same workshop tradition as the pieces that pass through international auction with provenance.

The piece in a room

At the size as listed, the rug works as a defining floor element under primary seating, a dining table, or as the anchor of a bedroom. The neutral palette pairs with mid-tone walls, walnut or oak floors, and a relaxed mix of upholstery materials. Direct daylight settles the saturation; lamp-lit evenings deepen the darker passages. The drawing reads cleanly across the room and rewards a closer look on approach. The rug expects to be the work the room is arranged around, not flooring underneath the furniture.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
