Red is the founding colour of the Persian carpet tradition. Madder root, abundant across central and western Asia, gave weavers a saturated, slow ageing red that ranged from coral through brick to a deep oxblood depending on mordant, water mineral content, and the length of the bath. The Rosso draws on that lineage. A field of warm madder red, classical floral pattern across the surface, a layered border to enclose the field without crowding it.
Three weavers shared the upright loom in northern India for roughly five and a half months. The foundation is cotton, the pile is hand-spun wool, the knot a Persian asymmetric tied row by row at a steady cadence. Madder root carried the field, walnut hull deepened the border indigos, and a small quantity of pomegranate softened the ivory accents into bone. Each colour was matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered.
The composition
A madder red ground holds a continuous floral repeat in indigo, ivory, and deeper rust. The pattern is dense without being busy. The border layers a wider rosette band between two thinner guard bands, all in the same palette, so that the boundary of the carpet feels integrated with the field. Plant dye gives the red a faint variation called abrash, the slight tonal shift between dye lots that distinguishes a hand woven carpet from a printed one. Over a decade the red will warm into terracotta and the ivory into bone.
What you are buying
A madder red Persian carpet of this density, sold at international auction with antique attribution, sits between four and eight lakh equivalent. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, fibre, density, and dye lineage. There is no markup for scarcity. The price reflects the months of skilled labour and the cost of plant dye carried through the workshop. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which no other floor object does at any price.
The piece in a room
The red ground suits a formal living room with chalk or putty walls and dark timber joinery. Brass and aged bronze sit well above the field. Place a low slung sofa in undyed linen or a deep walnut leather chesterfield over the carpet rather than concealing it. In a dining setting, a long teak table seating six to eight reads as the focal arrangement above a field that has its own gravity.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet half a turn each spring and autumn so footfall and light ageing distribute evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar lifted. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, working from the edge of the stain inward. Hand wash by a wool trained conservator every five to seven years. With these habits the carpet runs a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
