The floral repeat in the Indian carpet tradition draws on a Mughal-era marriage of Persian weaving with Mughal miniature painting. Where the Persian field used stylised palmettes, the Mughal-influenced workshops used recognisable iris, tulip, lotus, and carnation rendered with the precision of a court botanist. The rug under consideration here carries that lineage forward.

This rug was hand-tufted in India over 5 weeks by a team of two tufters and a finisher. Wool was driven through a stretched cotton primary cloth one row at a time with a tufting gun, then sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The final pass was sheared by hand to bring the pile to even depth across the field. The wool was sourced from New Zealand mills for the consistency of staple length the design demands. The rug is offered in a grey register, made in India.

The composition

The ground reads grey. The drawing carries the slight irregularities that hand work produces, with motifs marginally varied across the repeat. Those small departures from machine precision are what make the rug feel alive against an otherwise rectilinear room. The hand of the weaver is visible in the surface, the way a brush stroke is visible in an oil painting. Pairs well with linen, leather, walnut, and oak. Pairs less well with strongly patterned upholstery, where the rug expects to be the dominant graphic element in the room.

The composition pairs with mid-tone walls and warm wood furniture, and rises against off-white walls as a fielded ground. Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every tufted rug loses fibre to a beater bar regardless of price. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Expect light shedding for the first six weeks of use as loose fibres work themselves out of the pile; the body of the rug is unaffected. Professional dry clean every three years to refresh the surface and maintain the cotton scrim that supports the pile.
