The neoteric vocabulary belongs to the contemporary Indian tufting studios that have absorbed mid-century Scandinavian geometry, Bauhaus colour theory, and the discipline of Japanese textile design. The result is a rug that looks current without trying to chase a trend.

5 weeks of work for a team of two tufters and a finisher in an Indian workshop. Yarns of wool were tufted through a cotton primary, latex applied at the reverse to lock the pile, then a cotton scrim glued over the latex to finish the back. The pile was then sheared by hand, with the relief between motif and ground cut by a few millimetres so the pattern reads at standing distance. The finished rug carries the depth of a knotted piece at a fraction of the loom-time.

The composition

Ivory and washed sky blue, carried evenly across the rug. The drawing is contemporary, balanced rather than symmetrical, with each shape sized to leave the field room to read as a single composition. The cut pile holds the colour and softens the edges of every shape so the rug feels considered rather than printed. With wear the pile compacts evenly and the colour pulls together, which is the patina the design is built to acquire.

The piece in a room

At the size as listed, the rug works as a defining floor element under primary seating, a dining table, or as the anchor of a bedroom. The ivory sky blue palette pairs with mid-tone walls, walnut or oak floors, and a relaxed mix of upholstery materials. Direct daylight settles the saturation; lamp-lit evenings deepen the darker passages. The drawing reads cleanly across the room and rewards a closer look on approach. The rug expects to be the work the room is arranged around, not flooring underneath the furniture.

Care

Suction-only vacuuming, weekly. For spills, blot with a clean dry cloth, then mild detergent on a damp cloth if the stain resists. Professional dry clean every two years. The pile will shed for the first month or so as the cut fibres settle into the latex backing; this is normal and stops.
