Modern hand-tufted design is a younger tradition than knotting and answers different questions. The neoteric drawing here is built around the questions a contemporary room asks: how to ground the floor without dominating it, how to add colour without crowding the eye, how to look modern without dating quickly.

Two tufters and a finisher worked the loom for 7 weeks in India. Wool was pushed through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a hand-held tufting gun, then sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The finishing pass was done by hand with long shears, levelling the pile so the drawing reads cleanly across the field. The relief between motif and ground was cut to a couple of millimetres, which is what makes the pattern legible at standing distance.

The composition

Ivory ground over a soft grey under-tone, carried evenly across the rug. The drawing is contemporary, balanced rather than symmetrical, with each shape sized to leave the field room to read as a single composition. The hand-shear pass gives the motif a couple of millimetres of relief above the ground, which is what makes the pattern read across the room rather than dissolving into noise. Up close, the relief reads as a quiet sculptural detail rather than as a trick.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale, sized for a sectional sofa or a ten-seater dining table laid across it. The ivory grey carries a long room without dominating it; the design holds when seen from the doorway and resolves into incident on approach. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation; direct daylight lifts the brighter notes. The drawing rewards the room being kept simple around it.

Care

Vacuum once a week, beater bar disengaged. Spot clean spills with mild detergent and a clean cotton cloth, blotting outward. Plan a professional dry clean every two years. Light shedding in the early weeks settles as the loose fibre works free from the pile.
