Sino-Persian is the trade term for the family of carpets that married the dense classical Persian drawing with the finer knot count and tighter pile of the Chinese workshops, a synthesis that emerged in the early twentieth century and reset the upper end of the wool carpet market for two generations. The drawing carried in this rug carries that lineage forward, with a Persian medallion and vine repeat tied at the higher density the Sino-Persian tradition requires.

Three weavers in India shared the loom for roughly seven months. Around 2.0 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied by feel against a vertical beam, the wool drawn from a long-staple New Zealand fleece chosen because the finer staple holds the tighter knot count without losing the small irregularities that read as patina later. The dye baths were prepared from madder, fermented indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull, each matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the skein was lowered.

The composition

A soft cream field carries a faded madder medallion at the centre with vine work in indigo and walnut moving through the field. The drawing is finer than a village Heriz and looser than a court Tabriz, which is the Sino-Persian register precisely. A double guard band closes the border at a slightly lower height than the field. The colour will keep shifting for a decade. The cream warms toward bone, the madder mellows, and the indigo deepens.

What you are buying

Sino-Persian carpets in this scale and density trade at international auction between thirty and sixty thousand dollars when honest examples appear. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, in the same fibre, on the same loom geometry at the same higher knot count. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, a property no other domestic floor finish carries at this price point.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living area beneath the front edge of a sectional or under a six-to-eight seater dining table. The cream and madder palette pairs with walnut and oak floors, with mid-tone walls, and with both leather and unbleached linen upholstery. The finer knot count rewards close inspection, so place the rug where it will be walked on rather than only viewed from the doorway.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with suction alone and the beater bar off. Blot any spill at once with a clean cotton cloth and cool water. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. The piece runs ninety to a hundred years on a domestic floor under that care.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
