Modern carpet design in India draws on a deliberate cross-pollination between contemporary studio practice in textile and the long technical tradition of the wool loom. The patterns owe debts to mid-century European graphic design, to American minimalism, and to the indigenous Indian dhurrie tradition. What this rug carries into a current interior is the inheritance of that practice.

This rug was hand-tufted in India over 5 weeks by a team of two tufters and a finisher. Wool was driven through a stretched cotton primary cloth one row at a time with a tufting gun, then sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The final pass was sheared by hand to bring the pile to even depth across the field. The wool was sourced from New Zealand mills for the consistency of staple length the design demands. The rug is offered in a tan register, made in India.

The composition

The palette is built around tan. The pattern works because the negative space is allowed to breathe. The motifs hold their place, the field around them stays open, and the eye is given somewhere to rest between figures. That openness is what separates a good repeat from a busy one, and what allows the rug to sit under furniture without the pattern crowding the room. The wool is the carrier here, accepting the colour without flattening it and holding the slight variations of dye lot that read as life rather than as flaw.

Vacuum weekly with the beater off, suction only. Address spills with cotton cloth and cool water, blotting from the outside in. Initial shedding settles within four to six weeks. A professional dry clean every three years keeps the colour saturated and the latex backing sound. Use a non-slip pad underneath on hard floors to extend the life of the construction.
