A floral arrangement in a calibrated palette reads here as a tufted wool field, the way contemporary design studios have used the technique since the 1960s when the form first separated from utilitarian floor covering and became a graphic event in its own right. The drawing was made on graph paper, then translated to a stretched canvas at full scale before any wool reached the surface.

Hand-tufted in India over 5 weeks. Two tufters and a finisher worked the loom in shifts, pushing wool through the canvas with a hand-held gun, then sealing the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The pile was shorn by hand at the end so the figure stood proud of the ground by a measured millimetre or two, which is what lets the design read at room scale instead of dissolving underfoot.

The composition

The single wool-natural field carries the floral arrangement through subtle pile relief rather than colour change, the way a Jacquard weave handles a tone-on-tone pattern. The pile reads darker against the nap and lighter with it, giving the rug the same quiet animation a velvet curtain has under a window.

The piece in a room

Use the piece as the central organising element of a sitting area, with the sofa and chairs floating partly on it, or under a primary bed with the side tables clear. The colour holds against walnut floors, leather seating, and unbleached linen drapery without competition. Pair with calm upholstery, plain or subtly textured. The rug is the graphic anchor and is held back by busy fabric in the room. Side light reads the pile relief better than overhead light, which flattens it.

Care

Use a low-suction vacuum across the pile direction once a week. Spills come up with a clean cloth, dry first, damp second if needed. Early shedding is the loose fibre from the tufting process clearing itself and stops within a couple of months. A professional clean every two or three years keeps the colour fresh and clears any embedded grit from the foundation.
