The Beni Ourain and Moroccan tribal weavers of the Atlas mountains worked white-ground rugs as everyday objects, woven in undyed sheep wool with simple charcoal lines drawn across the field as a graphic anchor. The rugs were used as bedding, as floor cover, as ceremonial gift, depending on size, and the white was always functional rather than decorative. Otto draws on that tradition. Wool was hand-spun thick in the Atlas register, knotted in the Berber-style symmetric knot on a cotton foundation, and washed once after the loom came down. The composition

An undyed white field that carries the natural variation of the fleece rather than the flat brightness of bleached wool. A sparse charcoal or soft black line drawing across the field, often a diamond lattice or a few drawn motifs, is the only colour intervention. The white will warm to bone over years of light exposure rather than yellow. The line drawing settles into the wool as the pile beds in with use.
