The Beni Ourain weave came down from the cedar slopes of the Middle Atlas, where Berber women wove single-warp wool blankets that doubled as sleeping mats through the snow months. The diamond lattice in this rug carries that lineage. It was never decorative in origin. Each diamond stood for a household, a herd boundary, an ancestor remembered in the loom.
The piece took 4 to 5 months on the loom under 2 weavers, all of the knotting done by hand against a cotton warp. Wool from highland fleece, hand-spun and prepared in small batches. The micron variation is left intact, which is what gives the surface its slight visual life under raking light. The dyes were prepared in small batches and the wool matured in copper vats before being lowered, which is what holds the colour against the light over decades.
The composition
The geometry is sparse. Natural undyed marks against an undyed ground, set down with the kind of irregularity that a single weaver's hand always produces. There is no border. The field is meant to read as the floor of a tent rather than as a framed object. The pile breathes between thick and thin, never quite uniform, which is what separates a real Berber weave from a printed copy.
What you are buying
Mid-century interiors that built the modern reputation of the Beni Ourain rug, by Charlotte Perriand, by Le Corbusier, by Florence Knoll, paired the rug with concrete, steel, and unstained oak. Those original carpets, when they appear at auction, sell at multiples of this price. This rug is the same vocabulary, the same wool, the same loom, available at the start of its life rather than the end.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the working scale for a flat living room, the seating side of an open-plan layout, or a primary bedroom under the foot of a king bed. The composition sits cleanly under a sofa and a coffee table without disappearing under furniture, and reads as a single considered field even when partially covered. Works against both modern and classical seating, and pairs cleanly with leather, linen, and natural fibre upholstery.
Conservation
Half-turn rotation each season keeps the wear even. Suction-only vacuuming preserves the pile. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth. A wool conservator's hand-wash every six years restores the lustre and resets the foundation. The rug is built to last well past a century.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
