Berber weavers of the High Atlas have been knotting diamond and zigzag fields into raw wool for at least eight generations on the same kind of vertical loom. The motif you see here belongs to that quiet tradition. The pattern survives because it does not try to be ornamental. It is structural, like the timber bracing of a kasbah wall.
2 weavers shared the loom for 4 to 5 months, every knot tied by feel against a vertical beam. Wool from highland fleece, hand-spun and prepared in small batches. The micron variation is left intact, which is what gives the surface its slight visual life under raking light. The dyes were prepared in small batches and the wool matured in copper vats before being lowered, which is what holds the colour against the light over decades.
The composition
An open ivory field broken by a loose diamond lattice in charcoal. The wool is left in its natural micron irregularity, which means the ground is never flat, and the diamonds break and rejoin along their edges the way a chalk line breaks across rough plaster. The colour will warm by half a tone over the first decade as the lanolin in the wool oxidises. The pile catches raking morning light differently from the reading lamp at evening, which keeps the surface alive at all hours.
What you are buying
A real Beni Ourain rug, in pure undyed Atlas-grade wool, woven on a vertical loom by a single weaver in the original tradition, would carry a five-figure tag at any Western dealer. This is the same construction at a fraction of the price. The undyed wool means the rug will not fade with light. It will warm with age. It appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
At the size as listed the rug is built to anchor a primary room without disappearing under furniture. The composition is scaled to read against the seating arrangement, with the front legs of the sofa and any flanking armchairs sitting on the pile and a clear margin of bare floor at the perimeter. The proportions hold for both rectangular and squared room layouts and the field reads as a single considered ground rather than as a covering. Works against both modern and classical seating, and pairs cleanly with leather, linen, and natural fibre upholstery.
Conservation
Rotate one half-turn each spring and autumn so traffic and light age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, no beater bar. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. Cared for this way, the piece runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
