The modern Tibetan tradition was established in the second half of the twentieth century when refugee weavers from the Tibetan plateau settled in the Indian Himalaya and the Kathmandu valley, where they continued the older Tibetan knot on hand-spun highland wool blended with mulberry silk for the highlight tones. The City Life design vocabulary works inside that lineage with a contemporary urban geometry, the way a modernist textile designer would translate the older Tibetan medallion into a flat graphic field.

Three weavers shared the vertical loom for around five months. The pile is hand-spun highland wool blended with cultivated mulberry silk for the rust highlight tones, tied in Tibetan senneh-style knots row by row. The dye lots were drawn from madder, indigo, walnut, oak gall, and a small amount of weld for the warmer accents. Each colour matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks. After clipping the rug saw four days of sun and a long mineral wash to settle the saturation toward the patina the Tibetan tradition favours.

The composition

An asymmetric rust field with stylised geometric blocks running through it, drawn in the high-silk-content highlight tones so the surface catches light differently as the eye moves. The wool sits matte. The silk reads gloss. The contrast between the two registers gives the rug a depth of surface that pure-wool weavings cannot reproduce. The border is a single restrained guard band so the field carries the design.

What you are buying

Modern Tibetan wool-and-silk carpets from the established workshops carry trade prices of thirty to sixty thousand US dollars at the Western dealer level when this density of silk content is held. This rug is woven on the same loom architecture, in the same fibre blend, with the same plant-dye discipline. At one and a half lac it appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

The contemporary geometry pairs particularly well with modern interiors that want a hand-knotted carpet without the visual weight of a traced classical field. The rust ground holds against chalk plaster and warms walnut casework. Pairs with brushed brass, leather, raw linen, and a single large modern work above the sofa.

Conservation

Half-turn the rug each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot spills at once with clean cotton. Silk highlight tones require professional wool-and-silk-trained conservation, not the standard wool-only wash. Schedule conservation every five years. With this care the rug crosses eight decades.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
