The studio drawing for this rug is a contemporary composition held in grey, refined across several rounds of sample weaving before it was committed to a full-size loom. Tufted wool sits between flatweave and hand-knot in the carpet hierarchy, with the dense pile and short turnaround that makes a graphic statement possible at a working price.

The piece took 4 weeks to weave in India. Two tufters and a finisher worked side by side, drawing wool through a stretched cotton canvas with hand-held guns, sealing the reverse with natural latex over a cotton scrim, and shearing the pile to even relief by hand at the close. The yarn was dyed in small batches before it reached the loom so the field colours stay sitting next to each other rather than blending into a single mid-tone.

The composition

The single grey field carries the contemporary composition through subtle pile relief rather than colour change, the way a Jacquard weave handles a tone-on-tone pattern. The way the pile reads against and with the light is the visual signature a hand-tufted rug carries through its working life.

The piece in a room

Settle the piece under a primary sofa with all front legs resting on the field, or below a coffee table where the pile relief reads as part of the composition. The colour pairs naturally with walnut, oak, brass, and oiled leather. Lighter walls keep the geometry forward; darker walls let it sit into the architecture. Strongly patterned upholstery is the one combination to avoid, since the rug carries the graphic line in the room. Side light across the surface catches the pile relief better than overhead lighting.

Care

Use a low-suction vacuum or canister cleaner with the brush bar disengaged. Spills lift with a dry cotton cloth followed by a barely damp cloth, never a wet sponge. A small amount of shedding in the early weeks is normal and is the loose fibre from the tufting process working its way out of the pile. Have the rug professionally cleaned every couple of years rather than washing it at home, where the latex bonding behind the pile can hold water and break down faster than it should.
