Ikat as a motif vocabulary translates well to hand-tufting because the medium forgives a soft edge. The haze that defines a true ikat textile, where bound and dyed warps slightly miss their alignment, becomes a tufted brushstroke when wool is pushed through canvas with a hand gun. The pattern carries the same rhythm of blurred verticals and floating diamonds that the resist-dye tradition produced.
This rug was hand-tufted in India over four weeks by two tufters and a finisher. Wool was pushed through a stretched cotton primary canvas with a hand gun, row by row, then sealed at the back with natural latex and bonded to a cotton scrim. The final pass was a hand shear, evening the pile and lifting the relief between figure and ground.
The composition
A deep ground of charcoal sets the field and absorbs the line work, so the pattern surfaces only on careful looking. The dye shifts subtly between the wool fibres in the pile, giving the dark a worked texture rather than a flat printed weight. Ikat motifs march in vertical registers, their edges deliberately blurred to recall the resist-dye textiles the figure was born in. The eye reads the rhythm of the verticals before any individual figure resolves, and the rug holds together at room distance even when the close-up reading shows every blurred boundary as deliberate.
The piece in a room
size as listed sits at a scale where the piece becomes the visual ground of the room rather than an island inside it. Pairs with raw oak, brushed steel, and white walls; the ground reads as architectural rather than ornamental.
Care
Vacuum weekly on suction only, with the beater bar disengaged. Tufted rugs lose loose fibre in the first six weeks of use; this is the pile settling and does not affect the body of the rug. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, working from the edge inward, and reach for professional dry cleaning every two to three years rather than a domestic shampoo. Use a quality underlay so the latex back does not migrate marks onto the floor below.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
