What we call ikat is a dyeing technique that predates the loom. The yarn is grouped, bound, dipped, untied, and rebound for the second colour, and only after every pass is complete does it reach the weaver. The pattern's characteristic feathering at every edge is the moisture of the dye bath migrating one or two threads beyond its intended boundary.
Hand tufting trades the months a knotted carpet would take for the weeks a tufting gun and a stretched canvas allow. The tradeoff is a faster wool surface at a more democratic price, with the same wool, the same dye discipline, and the same hand finishing the workshop applies to its knotted pieces. This piece took four to five weeks on the loom with two tufters and a finisher sharing the work. The pile was sheared down by hand to bring the design into relief, with the higher tones standing two millimetres above the deeper field. The wool was carded, spun, and dyed in workshop batches before reaching the loom, and the back was finished with natural latex and a cotton scrim once the front of the rug was complete.
The composition
The pattern moves between sharp definition and soft dissolution depending on viewing distance. That ambiguity is the whole pleasure of the form. A rug with crisp edges in this idiom would be a printed cloth pretending to be an ikat. The dominant tones in this piece read as beige, brown.
The piece in a room
size as listed () is the working scale for a flat-living dining area or a primary bedroom with the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed. The composition fills the eye without overwhelming the room. Reads cleanly against both lime-washed plaster and saturated wall colour.
Care
Vacuum on suction once a week. Address spills immediately with a clean dry cloth, blotting from the outside in. Initial shedding is normal and clears within six weeks. A professional dry clean on a two- to three-year cadence keeps the wool bright.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
