Bohemian-style weaving is a deliberate construction of patina rather than a record of it. The contemporary studios that produce these rugs work from references in the antique trade and engineer the look of long use into the new piece. The result is a rug that arrives with the visual character of a long-loved object. The piece is built in that broader vocabulary.

Roughly 5 weeks of tufting. The cartoon was projected onto the back of a stretched canvas, the wool pushed through with a tufting gun, the loops cut to release the pile. The latex backing was poured by hand and the cotton scrim laid down before the rug came off the frame for shearing and binding. A second pass with long shears settled the pile to its final height. The rug is offered in a multi register, made in India.

The composition

Multi dominates the composition. The drawing carries the slight irregularities that hand work produces, with motifs marginally varied across the repeat. Those small departures from machine precision are what make the rug feel alive against an otherwise rectilinear room. The hand of the weaver is visible in the surface, the way a brush stroke is visible in an oil painting. The wool is the carrier here, accepting the colour without flattening it and holding the slight variations of dye lot that read as life rather than as flaw.

The piece in a room

At the format here the rug suits a study, a smaller drawing room, or a primary bedroom. The composition pairs with mid-tone walls and warm wood furniture, and rises against off-white walls as a fielded ground. The size also works as the entry rug for a longer hall, with the pattern reading as one walks across it.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every tufted rug loses fibre to a beater bar regardless of price. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Expect light shedding for the first six weeks of use as loose fibres work themselves out of the pile; the body of the rug is unaffected. Professional dry clean every three years to refresh the surface and maintain the cotton scrim that supports the pile.
