The drawing for this piece is a contemporary composition held in cordovan oxblood, raisin purple, carried in tufted wool. A pattern of this kind reads differently in tufted form than it would hand-knotted. The pile sits taller, the colour blocks read flatter at a distance, and the surface has more give underfoot. The form became its own design language in the 1960s, when American and European studios began commissioning rugs as graphic statements rather than as background floor coverings, and it has stayed there.

Hand-tufted in India over 6 weeks by two tufters and a finisher. Wool yarn drawn into stretched cotton canvas with a tufting gun, then bonded behind with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The shear pass was done by hand, lowering and lifting the pile to set the geometry in relief. The wool was dyed in small batches before tufting so the saturation holds across the surface without the streaking that bulk dyeing leaves behind.

The composition

The way the pile reads against and with the light is the visual signature a hand-tufted rug carries through its working life.

The piece in a room

Settle the piece under a primary sofa with all front legs resting on the field, or below a coffee table where the pile relief reads as part of the composition. The colour pairs naturally with walnut, oak, brass, and oiled leather. Lighter walls keep the geometry forward; darker walls let it sit into the architecture. Strongly patterned upholstery is the one combination to avoid, since the rug carries the graphic line in the room. Side light across the surface catches the pile relief better than overhead lighting.

Care

Use a low-suction vacuum or canister cleaner with the brush bar disengaged. Spills lift with a dry cotton cloth followed by a barely damp cloth, never a wet sponge. A small amount of shedding in the early weeks is normal and is the loose fibre from the tufting process working its way out of the pile. Have the rug professionally cleaned every couple of years rather than washing it at home, where the latex bonding behind the pile can hold water and break down faster than it should.
