The Persian red carpet is one of the oldest and steadiest categories in the hand-knotted tradition. Madder root has been cultivated across the Iranian plateau for more than two thousand years and produces a red that ranges from terracotta through cherry to deep oxblood depending on the mordant and the bath time. The Drogo design works inside that tradition with a centred medallion field, corner spandrels, and a multi-band border, in the manner of the classical workshop pieces that travelled from Persia into European collections from the seventeenth century onward.
The carpet was woven in India by three weavers across roughly five months. Hand-spun wool was knotted with the asymmetric Persian knot on a cotton warp at a density appropriate to the medallion drawing. The wool was vegetable dyed in madder root, walnut hull, indigo, and oak gall before knotting began. The finished piece was washed in plant soap, sun-dried, and finally hand-trimmed across the surface to bring the central medallion and border drawing into clear visual relief.
The composition
A central diamond medallion in deep madder red sits on a complementary madder field. Corner spandrels mirror the medallion in inverse colour. The border is a multi-band stack with vine and palmette repeats in indigo, walnut, and ivory. The composition is symmetrical, traditional, and confident, the visual logic of a classical Persian carpet without the fussiness of late-period dealer reproductions. The red will continue to deepen and the indigo will warm over the next decade as light and use settle the dyes.
What you are buying
Antique Persian medallion carpets in comparable condition sell at international auction houses in the range of six to thirty thousand US dollars depending on attribution, and Western interior dealers carry contemporary pieces in this tradition at three to five thousand pounds. The construction here is identical, the dye process is identical, the pile material is identical. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, particularly as the madder ground deepens toward a true classical red.
The piece in a room
A red medallion carpet of this scale belongs in a room arranged around it. Reads beautifully in a formal living room beneath a long sofa, in a study with leather armchairs and a writing desk, or under a six-to-eight seat dining table where candle and pendant light pull the red into glow. Pairs cleanly with walnut, brass, oxblood leather, and chalky off-white plaster walls. Pairs poorly with strongly patterned upholstery; the carpet expects to lead.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, in the direction of the pile. Treat spills with prompt blotting on a clean cotton cloth, never with household cleaners. Schedule a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care the carpet runs into multiple generations of useful life.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
