The classical medallion carpet is one of the most stable forms in the textile tradition. The basic architecture has not changed in five centuries: a central rosette, a framed field, layered borders. What changes is the rendering. The version here translates the formal Persian-Mughal vocabulary into a softer, hand-tufted reading suited to contemporary domestic use.

This rug was hand tufted in India by two tufters and a finisher over several weeks. Wool was driven through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting gun, the back was sealed with natural latex and a cotton scrim, and the front pile was hand-shorn to a level surface. The final passes were done with long shears to lift the pattern relief above the ground.

The composition

The hand-finished surface carries the slight irregularity of a wool-and-loom piece, which keeps the design from reading as a print. The pile is dense enough to give the rug weight underfoot, with the kind of solid hand that distinguishes a wool tufted piece from a synthetic copy. The red is dyed at the yarn stage rather than the surface, so the colour reads through the depth of the pile rather than sitting only at the tip.

The piece in a room

size as listed. The size belongs at the foot of a bed, in a hallway, beneath a console, or as a layered accent on a larger neutral floor covering. The hand-shorn surface gives the rug a low sculptural relief that catches raking light. The red reads true under most domestic lighting and tones down under low ambient light.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Tufted rugs lose fibre to a beater bar regardless of price. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, working from the outside in. Some shedding is normal in the first six to eight weeks of use as loose fibres work themselves out of the pile. Professional dry clean every two to three years.
