Traditional medallion carpets in the Persian and Mughal lineage are the most copied of all rug formats because the structure works. A central focus, a framed field, layered borders. The pattern in this rug treats the formula with respect, keeping the layered geometry while loosening the line work to suit a hand-tufted reading. The composition belongs to a six-century continuum that runs from the Safavid court looms through the Mughal palace floors into the contemporary Indian workshop.

Hand tufted in India in several weeks by two tufters and a finisher. The wool was sourced from New Zealand and Indian fleece, hand-skeined and dyed before being passed through the tufting gun. Latex seal, cotton scrim, hand-shorn pile, edge bound by hand.

The composition

The hand-finished surface carries the slight irregularity of a wool-and-loom piece, which keeps the design from reading as a print. The pile is dense enough to give the rug weight underfoot, with the kind of solid hand that distinguishes a wool tufted piece from a synthetic copy. The blue is dyed at the yarn stage rather than the surface, so the colour reads through the depth of the pile rather than sitting only at the tip.

The hand-shorn surface gives the rug a low sculptural relief that catches raking light. The blue reads true under most domestic lighting and tones down under low ambient light.

Suction-only vacuuming, weekly. Spills blotted with a clean cotton cloth, never rubbed. Initial shedding settles inside two months of regular use. Professional dry clean every three years keeps the pile in good condition. Avoid placement in direct continuous sunlight to keep the colours from washing.
