Geometry on the floor of a room is older than ornament. A grid, a diamond, a stripe, a zigzag, the marks the eye reads first because they organise space. A tufted rug in geometric vocabulary works because the pile of the surface flatters the discipline of the line.

This piece was hand tufted in India over 5 weeks by a small team. Wool worked through a stretched cotton canvas, latex bonded, scrim finished. The ivory, silver ground was hand-sheared to bring the geometric elements into a slightly higher plane than the field.

Hand finishing is what separates a serious tufted piece from a market alternative. After the gun work the rug is moved to a finishing bench where shears, scissors, and a hand-held trimmer cut the pile into the planes the design needs. The relief between figure and ground is what makes the pattern read at room scale.

The Donjon cartoon was drawn for this collection by a small studio that has been working with the same finisher since the mid-2010s.

The composition

Ivory, silver sits across the field as a single considered ground. The pattern is layered over it with restraint. Borders are kept narrow so the eye is not pulled to the edges; the design stays in the field where it belongs. The pattern was graphed at full scale before the dye lots were called. Each line on the graph represents a single decision about colour relationship that no software-generated alternative can replicate.

The piece in a room

The piece works at the size as listed. The ivory, silver palette pairs cleanly with walnut, oak, brass, leather, and linen. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation; bright walls push the colour forward as a focal field. The composition expects to be the most considered graphic element in the room.

Care

Suction-only vacuuming on a weekly cycle. Blot spills with a clean cloth, never rub. Light shedding in the first month of use is normal as the loose pile fibres work themselves free; the density of the rug remains unaffected. Professional cleaning every two to three years keeps the pile crisp. A breathable rug pad underneath protects both the floor and the latex backing.
