This pattern is one of a series of compositions developed by a Turkish design studio over the last decade. The studio works between the inherited geometry of the Anatolian carpet and the visual habits of the European design room, with results that read modern from any angle.

The palette is anchored in a multi-toned palette. Successive proofs on cloth refined the colour relationships until the studio could lock the cartoon for production. The geometry rewards both standing distance and close approach.

The composition

A multi-toned palette is the working colour of the field. The geometry is built to read across distance and to reward close approach in equal measure. Small-batch vat dyeing produces a slight tonal drift that gives the surface its sense of life; from any standing position the rug reads as one quiet ground rather than a tile that repeats. Across the first year the saturation will tighten and the field will deepen by half a stop as the wool oxidises against ambient light.

The fibre

Heat-set polypropylene yarn. The colour sits inside the fibre rather than on top of it, which is the reason saturation holds against window light and against vacuum cleaning across a working life. Wine, coffee, juice and oil release from the surface with a damp cloth and a drop of mild detergent; nothing soaks in. The pile is dimensionally stable and does not shed.

The piece in a room

5'3" x 7'6" sits naturally under a six-seater dining arrangement, or beneath a medium sectional in a living area. The rug is sized to be visible from above when the family is seated and from the side when guests walk in. The geometry resolves at standing distance and the colour deepens under the wash of overhead light.

Care

Vacuum routinely with no special precaution. Spot clean with cold water and a mild soap; the heat-set yarn releases pigmented spills before they bond at the molecular level. For deeper cleaning, machine wash on a thirty-degree cold cycle and dry flat in shade. No professional cleaning is required and the rug carries its colour through a decade of full use without fading under normal interior light.
