The floral vocabulary in carpet design has periodically come into and out of fashion since the Mughal period, and is currently in a strong cycle of contemporary preference for botanical motif and natural reference. The rug here is built in that current vocabulary with traditional weaving technique. The composition in this rug sits squarely in that continuum.

A team of two tufters and one finisher carried the rug for 5 weeks. The pattern was traced on the cotton primary in chalk, then worked in wool with a tufting gun row by row. The surface was sheared after the latex set, the borders bound by hand. The wool ran through three quality checks between dye lot and shipping, the kind of process control no machine line replicates. The rug is offered in a brown register, made in India.

The composition

The ground reads brown. The geometry reads as a single composed surface rather than a stack of repeating motifs. Long-staple wool gives the pile a slow lustre that deepens once the rug has settled into a room and the foot traffic has begun to polish the high points. The colour shifts very slightly between dye lots within the same field, the abrash that connoisseurs read as the signature of plant pigment rather than synthetic. Pairs well with linen, leather, walnut, and oak. Pairs less well with strongly patterned upholstery, where the rug expects to be the dominant graphic element in the room.

The piece in a room

At the format here the rug suits a study, a smaller drawing room, or a primary bedroom. The composition pairs with mid-tone walls and warm wood furniture, and rises against off-white walls as a fielded ground. The size also works as the entry rug for a longer hall, with the pattern reading as one walks across it.

Care

Vacuum on suction only, weekly. Blot any spill at once with a clean white cloth, working from the edge inward. Light shedding in the first weeks is normal as the loose fibre works free of the pile. A professional cleaning every two to three years maintains both the surface and the latex backing. Avoid steam cleaning, which softens the latex and shortens the life of the construction.
