Beni Ourain is the most precise of the Atlas tribal traditions. The drawing is reduced to a single repeating element, almost always a diamond lattice in soft black on undyed white wool, and the weaver works without addition or ornament. The discipline is what gives Beni Ourain its quiet power. A modern interior architect can place a Beni Ourain anywhere because it makes no demand on the room. Mometh works in that strict register.

One weaver worked this Mometh piece in size as listed across roughly two and a half to three months in India. Wool was hand-spun thick the way the Atlas register requires, knotted in the Berber-style symmetric knot on a cotton foundation. The diamond lattice was charted onto the warp before knotting and worked in soft black against the undyed white ground. The pile was left long, in the Beni Ourain manner, and washed once to open the hand.

The composition

An undyed white field carrying the natural irregularity of hand-spun fleece rather than the flat brightness of bleached wool. A continuous soft black diamond lattice runs across the field with no border ornament and no break. The piece is entirely about the proportion of the lattice to the white between it. Across years the white warms to bone and the lattice settles into the wool rather than reading as a strict graphic interruption.

Genuine antique Beni Ourain rugs of intact condition trade at the major Western auctions in the range of $3,000 to $8,000 for comparable size. This is contemporary weaving in the same tribal register, by hand, in hand-spun wool. The Beni Ourain is a long-lived object on a floor; the piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the long pile gaining character with foot wear.

The piece in a room

The Beni Ourain belongs in a primary bedroom under or beside the bed, in a living area with light wood floors, in a meditation room, or in a study with low seating. The lattice pairs cleanly with curved upholstery, with leather, with raw oak, with limestone, with whitewashed plaster. The long pile is meant to be walked on barefoot.

Conservation

Rotate end for end twice a year. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off; the long pile snags otherwise. Blot spills at once with a clean cotton cloth, which matters more on white than on coloured ground. A wool-trained hand wash every five to six years preserves the white and keeps the pile open. The piece runs two generations of careful ownership.
