Hand-tufting accommodates a graphic vocabulary that knotting struggles with. Sweeping curves, large solid fields, abrupt colour breaks. Tufted by a tufter and a finisher in India over about 4 weeks, the rug carries a dense New Zealand wool pile on a woven cotton foundation. The back is sealed with natural latex and a cotton scrim that gives the body its weight without adding stiffness. A final hand-shear refined the depth profile so the grey field reads as relief rather than as flat colour.

The composition

Grey as the dominant register, with the modern drawing handled in restrained contrast against the ground. The pile holds its plumpness underfoot. The shorn relief carries the line work at a depth that does not dissolve under furniture weight. The wool keeps a slight irregularity in twist and tone that distinguishes hand-finished tufting from a fully mechanised process. The piece will pick up the patina of a well-used surface rather than wearing into a flat zone.

Care

Suction-only vacuuming once a week. Address spills by blotting from the outside in with clean cotton, then follow with a damp pass on the same area. Initial shedding is normal and self-limiting over the first two months. Rotate end for end yearly. Professional dry-clean every two to three years to refresh the pile and restore the loft.
