The pattern in this rug grew out of contemporary studios working in conversation with mid-century Scandinavian and Anatolian geometry. An asymmetric grid in shifting tonal values, with the densities tightening at the centre and opening toward the edges so the field reads as one considered composition rather than a repeating tile.

The studio worked the design at scale on graphite, chalk and ink for several months before approving it for production. The palette holds a ivory register, separated by lighter channels of negative space so the eye moves across the field rather than landing in any one place.

The composition

The work is composed around a ivory register. The figure is held at a quiet density across the field so the rug reads as ground rather than as ornament, which is the difference between a carpet that recedes into the room and one that fights with the rest of the furnishing. The colour will deepen and the geometry will tighten across the first year of use. Plant-derived dye gives the field a soft tonal register that synthetic colour does not reach; the wool ages into the palette rather than against it.

The fibre

Heat-set polypropylene yarn. The colour sits inside the fibre rather than on top of it, which is the reason saturation holds against window light and against vacuum cleaning across a working life. Wine, coffee, juice and oil release from the surface with a damp cloth and a drop of mild detergent; nothing soaks in. The pile is dimensionally stable and does not shed.

The piece in a room

5'3" x 7'6" is the working living-room scale for a flat or a primary bedroom. The rug holds a three-seater sofa with a chair on each side, or floats centred under a six-seat dining table. Walnut or oak floors set the palette off; pale stone lets the rug carry the room as the dominant ground colour. Furniture sits with the front legs on the rug and the back legs on the floor, which is the canonical living-room arrangement at this size.

Care

The rug needs nothing more than weekly vacuuming and prompt attention to spills. The yarn does not absorb pigmented liquid at the surface, so wine, coffee and juice release before they bond. Machine wash cold if needed; the piece dries flat without distortion. No professional cleaning is necessary across its working life.
