This pattern is one of a series of compositions developed by a Turkish design studio over the last decade. The studio works between the inherited geometry of the Anatolian carpet and the visual habits of the European design room, with results that read modern from any angle.

The palette is anchored in ivory and gray. Successive proofs on cloth refined the colour relationships until the studio could lock the cartoon for production. The geometry rewards both standing distance and close approach.

The composition

The palette is built around ivory and gray, with the secondary tones held back so the principal colour does the work. The slight tonal shifts in the ground are the trace of small-batch dyeing, where each vat carries its own register and no two areas of the field read identically. Up close the irregularity is visible as life; from across the room it gathers into a single considered colour. The composition is read as a whole. The piece reads differently against morning light than against evening lamp; the saturation lifts in daylight and tightens after dusk.

The fibre

The fibre is heat-set polypropylene. Pigment is fixed into the yarn at temperature, which means the colour holds against direct sun without fading and does not lift under cleaning. Stains release at the surface because the fibre does not absorb pigmented liquid; spills are blotted away with a damp cloth before they set. The pile recovers from furniture compression without needing steam or grooming.

The piece in a room

At 5'3" x 7'5" the rug anchors a medium living area or a primary bedroom. It expects to sit under the front legs of seating rather than the entire arrangement, with a half-foot of rug visible between sofa edge and floor on every side. The composition reads whole from a standing position at the door of the room. Pairs with mid-tone walls and warm wood furniture.

Care

Vacuum weekly on any setting. Spot clean with mild detergent on a clean cotton cloth. The fibre is engineered to release stains; spilled wine, coffee or oil lifts with a damp cloth before they bond to the yarn. Machine wash on a cold thirty-degree cycle if a spill resists spot cleaning; the size folds into a domestic drum and dries flat in two hours. The pile recovers without the need for steaming.
