Persian floral carpet design, when stripped of the dense central medallion that crowds many classical pieces, reads as a controlled garden seen from above. Three weavers shared this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) loom in India over around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted at a density that gives the floral drawing definition. The ivory ground is undyed New Zealand wool; the floral colours are vegetable-mordanted in copper vessels. After weaving the rug was sheared by hand, washed for lustre, and the selvedges hand-finished.

The composition

An ivory field with an allover floral repeat in muted rust, soft indigo, faint sage, and old rose, with a layered border in cream and deeper rust. The pattern reads as a single composed garden at viewing distance and resolves into individual vines and palmettes on approach. Over the first decade the ivory will warm into bone, the rust will lighten, and the indigo will deepen, producing the patina that distinguishes a hand-dyed wool piece.
