xandex XANX-5 Ivory Wool Handmade Carpet 5'3" x 7'6"

Tufting is the wool equivalent of oil painting on canvas. The wool yarn is pushed through a stretched canvas ground one row at a time, then sealed at the back with latex and a cotton scrim. The technique allows tighter shaping of motifs than knotting permits and a deeper, more even pile. The carpet that comes off the frame has the body and weight of a knotted rug at a fraction of the production time.

Indian workshops produced the rug over 5 weeks. A team of two pushed wool yarn through the canvas one motif at a time, working from a chalk-marked back, while a third hand finished the binding and trimmed the pile to depth. The latex coat was applied in a single pour, allowed to cure for forty-eight hours, and laminated to a cotton backing that gives the rug its hand and weight.

The composition

The ivory carries the field. The motif emerges as a tonal shift rather than a hard-edged graphic, which is the property that lets the rug sit in a composed room without claiming the eye. Up close, the carve work shows in the slight relief between figure and ground; at distance, the surface reads as a single saturated colour event.

The piece in a room

A medium living room with a three-seat sofa and a pair of chairs accepts the piece comfortably. The ivory ground handles both linen upholstery and leather. Ivory rugs hold their cleanest read against dark hardwood and against pale plaster equally. Best with one strong piece of wall art and otherwise restrained surfaces; the rug carries enough visual weight that the room does not need a second graphic event.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged; suction alone is enough to lift household soil from the pile. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Light shedding is normal for the first six weeks as loose fibres clear from the pile, and the body of the rug is unaffected by the process. A professional dry clean every three years preserves the ivory saturation and lifts ground-in soil that domestic vacuuming cannot reach.
