Hand-tufting moves a design from cartoon to floor in weeks rather than months. A stretched cotton canvas is mounted on a vertical frame, the design transferred in chalk, and wool pushed through with a tufting gun one row at a time. The technique was developed in the early twentieth century to bring the depth of a hand-knotted pile within reach of a residential market that could not absorb six months of loom time per carpet.

India is where this carpet was tufted, over about 4 weeks by a tufter and a finisher. Wool was pushed through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting gun, then sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The final pass was a hand-shear that relieved the navy field by a precise depth above the ground. That shorn relief is what gives the pattern its read at room scale rather than letting it dissolve into noise.

The composition

A navy field carries the composition. The modern drawing relieves the surface in low contrast so the pattern holds at room scale and reveals on approach. The wool is undyed where the design demands it and over-dyed elsewhere, which gives the contrast a depth that flat-printed work cannot match. The plush hand of the pile sits well underfoot in cool months and does not feel heavy in summer rooms with cross ventilation. The colour interaction is what carries the work: a single tone read against its quieter neighbour rather than a louder one.

The piece in a room

At the size as listed, the rug works as a focal field in a considered room. Restrained upholstery, warm wood, and walls in a tonal register all let the navy ground sit as the central element of the composition rather than as a competing voice. Care

Suction-only vacuuming once a week. Address spills by blotting from the outside in with clean cotton, then follow with a damp pass on the same area. Initial shedding is normal and self-limiting over the first two months. Rotate end for end yearly. Professional dry-clean every two to three years to refresh the pile and restore the loft.
