Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Warm Grey 11085 9' x 12'

Warm grey is the colour designers reach for when the room needs a quiet ground that does not go cold. The shade is grey only in name; underneath it sits closer to a heathered taupe, with brown and a hint of pink shifting the temperature toward the warmer side of neutral. Translating that quality into a hand-knotted wool field is the territory of the patchwork overdye, where the under-colours of the salvaged wool soften any mineral coldness in the new dye.

The 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) carpet uses around sixty patches cut from Anatolian and Persian rugs woven between roughly 1945 and 1985. Three weavers in India worked the new piece for around four months, squaring the salvaged wool by hand, recomposing it on a fresh cotton warp, knotting fresh seam stitches between each patch, and lowering the assembled field into a single immersion bath of warm grey overdye that the aged fibres took at varying intensities.

The composition

The field reads as a continuous warm grey from the threshold of a room and as an animated quilt of related neutral values from arm's length. Patches that began ivory now glow as the lightest taupe. Patches with old red grounds shift into deeper smoke-brown. Patches with original indigo cool into proper grey. Faded original medallions and broken borders surface beneath the dye like the ghost of a printed paper. The understatement of the chord lets every other element in the room speak.

Patchwork carpets in this size and construction sell through European interior dealers at four to six thousand pounds and are increasingly understood as a genuinely new category of collectible textile work. The pricing here reflects direct sourcing from the Indian workshop tradition. The fibre itself is forty to eighty years old at the moment of sale, originally hand-knotted in the Anatolian or Persian tradition long before its second life as a patch. Use only seats the dye further and deepens the surface patina across decades.

A warm grey field at this scale is one of the most useful pieces in interior architecture. The carpet supports almost any colour above it without conflict, particularly cream, ochre, deep green, terracotta, or oxblood upholstery. Conservation

Weekly vacuum, beater bar disengaged, suction only. Rotate the rug a half turn at the start of each spring so window light ages the field evenly. Spills lift cleanly when blotted promptly with a dry cotton cloth. Schedule a wool conservator wash every six years to refresh the depth and remove embedded dust. The carpet has the better part of a century of useful life ahead of it.
