Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Warm Grey 11085 8' x 10'

Warm Grey is the most useful neutral the overdye process produces because it sits between charcoal and bone with a slight ochre undertone that keeps it from going cold. The bath must hold this temperature without drifting to either side, and the older wool absorbs it at varying intensities to give the field its quiet movement. The result is a near-perfect ground colour for rooms with strong joinery or art.

Recovered hand-knotted wool sections were sheared down and washed clean of original dye. Two artisans worked the dye phase over close to four months, lowering each piece into a warm grey bath for forty-eight hours at controlled temperature. A finisher stitched the patches to a cotton backing and gave the surface a final hand-shear to six millimetres.

The composition

A field of warm mid grey that moves across the rug from a paler stone in some patches to a deeper graphite in others, with a faint ochre undertone holding the temperature steady. The seams are quiet. Underlying carpet patterns ghost through as the lightest tonal shifts. Under daylight the grey reads as a clean neutral, and under tungsten the ochre undertone emerges. Over two years the colour will settle and the wool will polish with use.

Conservation

Suction vacuum weekly. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth from the edge inward. A wool conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years.
