Warm grey is the most demanding of the over-dye palettes because grey wants to slide toward either green or violet without warning. The patchwork over-dye family reaches a stable warm grey by routing walnut hull and oak gall through a measured indigo correction, applied cold over salvaged wool in two passes. The result is a quiet field that reads softer than charcoal, warmer than concrete, with the dustiness of an old plaster wall in a north-facing room.
Two weavers and a finisher worked this carpet over roughly four months on a vertical Indian loom. Antique pile fragments were hand-cut, re-knotted across a cotton warp into a continuous body, and the assembled rug was then sent to the wash team for the over-dye. The base wool is hand-spun mountain fleece. The over-dye was applied in two cold passes so the underlying tonal variation in the fragments survives the bath rather than being flattened beneath it.
The composition
A continuous warm grey field, deepening into charcoal at the seams of older dark fragments and lifting toward dove where the underlying pile was lighter. Vine work, faded medallions, and small lattice fragments register as low-contrast echoes beneath the over-dye. The carpet reads cooler in daylight, leans warmer under tungsten, and shifts toward taupe under candle or sunset light. That tonal mobility is built into the dye recipe.
What you are buying
Comparable warm-grey over-dyed patchwork pieces of this size move through European auction at $3,500 to $6,500 in clean condition. The rug here is the same construction, in real wool over cotton, finished by hand shear. Walnut and oak gall are stable plant pigments that conserve cleanly across decades. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the grey settles toward a softer mushroom register over time.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) sits well in a primary bedroom, a small library, or a quiet sitting area where the floor needs to recede rather than assert. The warm grey palette pairs with chalk walls, oak and ash floors, brass fittings, and any natural linen or undyed cotton upholstery. It works alongside black-and-white photography and patinaed bronze better than against strongly coloured art. It is the most architecturally neutral piece in the over-dye family.
Conservation
Weekly vacuuming on suction only. Rotate the carpet a half turn every six months. Blot spills with cold water and clean cotton, never rub. Avoid bleach-based cleaners; they shift the warm register toward cool grey. A specialist wool wash every five years preserves the saturation. With this care, the carpet runs forty years of household use and remains conservable for further decades.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
