Warm grey is the most worked colour in the contemporary interior. It is the wall paint of restored haveli, the upholstery of mid-century Scandinavian sofas, the lime wash of a Mediterranean villa. In the over-dyed patchwork tradition, warm grey is the most technically demanding of the over-dye baths, struck from indigo softened with walnut hull and a touch of iron until the cool of the indigo and the warmth of the walnut settle into a single mineral tone.
Five weavers shared this 12' x 15' (366 x 457 cm) loom for close to seven months. Knot count comes in around 4.7 million Persian asymmetric ties laid over a cotton warp. The vintage panels were sourced from older Turkish and Persian carpets that had already lived twenty to fifty years, cut and re-knotted into a new ground while still under tension. The grey was struck across nine slow immersions in copper vats, each followed by a forty-minute oxidation in air, then sealed with a long iron after-bath that holds the temperature of the colour.
The composition
A unified warm grey field carries a grid of unequal rectangular panels. Inside each panel, the ghost of an older carpet survives as a tonal echo, a medallion in one cell, a Herati repeat in another, a stylised palmette in a third. Because the over-dye sits at a neutral midpoint, the original palettes of the source fragments rise back toward visibility instead of disappearing. The grey will lighten gradually over the next decade as the wool ages, and the underlying patterns will continue to clarify.
What you are buying
Patchwork over-dyed carpets in this density and at this scale list with European and American dealers between $9,000 and $13,000 when stock is available. The piece is offered at clearance pricing well below that range. The discount reflects inventory turnover, not workmanship. Hand-knotted wool in vegetable dye appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the property that distinguishes a rug from every other furnishing in a room.
The piece in a room
12' x 15' (366 x 457 cm) suits a long drawing room, an open-plan dining and lounge layout, or a library built around a central bench. Warm grey is the most flexible of the over-dyed palettes. It pairs with oak, walnut, and limestone floors, with linen and leather, with brass and aged nickel, with both contemporary art and traditional joinery. It does not push other elements out of the room.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn to age the wool evenly under light and foot traffic. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a dry cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. With this regimen, the piece holds for eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
