Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Warm Grey 11085 10' x 14'

Warm grey is one of the most difficult colours in dyeing because it sits between cool slate and warm taupe and slips toward either neighbour at the slightest variation in mordant. The over-dye bath in this patchwork was tuned with a small percentage of madder over an iron-modified base of oak gall, holding the grey just on the warmer side of neutral so it reads as architectural rather than industrial. Vintage carpet panels were assembled into a single field that behaves as one weathered surface.

Three weavers spent six months on the construction. Salvaged sections from village carpets aged two to four decades were measured, trimmed, and seamed onto a new cotton foundation. The wool is hand-spun, oilier than commercial yarn because the lanolin had decades to settle. The over-dye was applied in a single long bath; the wool went in twenty minutes per panel and dried in shaded air for forty-eight hours so the iron oxidised cleanly.

The composition

A continuous field of mushroom and stone reads first. Up close the surface breaks into warm grey, ash, faded driftwood, and the occasional pale ochre where the original red bled through the over-dye. Geometric and floral pattern from the source carpets surfaces as ghost work, never claiming attention. The composition behaves as a single weathered ground.
