Ultramarine was for centuries the most expensive blue in the European painter's palette, ground from lapis lazuli mined in the mountains of Afghanistan and reserved for the cloak of the Virgin and the deepest skies of altarpieces. Synthetic ultramarine arrived in the 1820s and democratised the colour without quite matching its depth. The wool version in this carpet sits closer to the lapis original than to the synthetic substitute, because the dye is laid over forty years of pre-existing colour rather than over a uniform white.

The 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) field is constructed from patches cut out of Anatolian and Persian carpets woven between roughly 1945 and 1985. In India, three weavers worked the new piece together for around four months. They cut the salvaged wool into hand-sized squares, reassembled them on a new cotton warp, knotted in fresh seam stitches by hand between every patch, and finally lowered the entire field into a single immersion bath of deep ultramarine dye.

The composition

The dominant note is a single saturated ultramarine, though the field reads as a layered chord rather than a flat blue. Patches that began with ivory now glow at the brightest end of the spectrum. Patches that started with old red sit closer to royal violet under the dye. Patches with original indigo deepen toward a near-black blue. Half-medallions and broken borders surface as gentle ghost lines beneath the colour. The overall effect is closer to the deep panel of a Renaissance altarpiece than to a contemporary rug.

What you are buying

Patchwork wool carpets of this construction trade through European interior dealers in the four to six thousand pound range and are increasingly written about in textile collecting circles as a genuine new category. This price represents direct sourcing from the Indian workshop and bypasses the re-sale margin entirely. The wool is between forty and eighty years old at the moment of new sale and arrives carrying a patina that no new yarn can imitate. Use only deepens that quality further.

The piece in a room

Ultramarine at carpet scale demands a generous architectural setting. The carpet supports white plaster walls, raw oak or walnut floors, and bone or oatmeal upholstery. Reads beautifully in a room with a high ceiling and a tall window, where natural light sets the blue glowing against the warmth of timber. Pairs cleanly with brass lamps and dark wood furniture. Avoid placing strong patterned blue art in the same room; let the carpet carry the chroma.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar off, in the direction of the pile. Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring so light and footfall age the surface evenly. Treat spills with prompt blotting on a dry cotton cloth, never with household cleaners. Schedule a wool conservator wash every six years. With this regimen the carpet remains a presentable object for decades.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
