Ultramarine was, until 1826, the most expensive pigment in the European painter's box. It was ground from lapis lazuli and reserved for the Virgin's robe in early Renaissance altarpieces because patrons could not bear to commission anything less. The carpet over-dye family does not use lapis, but it borrows the visual idea, applying a calibrated indigo over salvaged antique pile to land at the cool, slightly violet register the painters spent fortunes to achieve.

Three weavers carried this rug across roughly four months on a vertical loom in India. Antique wool pile fragments were sorted by tone, hand-cut, and re-knotted across a cotton warp into a continuous body, then submerged in a cold indigo bath in two passes. The wool is hand-spun, which means each block accepts the dye at a marginally different rate, giving the saturation a vibration that flat industrial dye cannot reproduce. A finisher hand-sheared the surface to level the original pile-height differences between fragments.

The composition

A unified ultramarine ground, deepening into near-cobalt at the seams and lifting toward periwinkle where the older pile took less dye. Beneath the over-dye, faded vine and medallion fragments register as low-contrast traces. The carpet reads almost violet under tungsten light, settles into pure cool blue under daylight, and pushes toward grey-blue under cool LED. That spectral mobility is the visible signature of a deep indigo bath.

What you are buying

Comparable hand-knotted ultramarine over-dyed pieces of this scale move through European specialist dealers at $4,000 to $7,500 in clean condition. The rug here is the same construction, in real wool over cotton, finished by hand shear. Indigo is the most stable dye in the family and the easiest to conserve. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the colour develops a softer marine register over time rather than fading flat.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) sits naturally in a primary bedroom, a small study, or under a four-seater dining table in a flat. The ultramarine palette pairs with white plaster walls, brass and bronze fittings, oak and walnut surfaces, and unbleached cotton upholstery. It works alongside black-and-white photography, watercolour seascapes, and any restrained linen. It expects to hold the cool register of the room on its own.

Conservation

Weekly suction vacuuming, no rotating brush. Rotate the carpet end to end every six months. Blot spills with cold water on cotton cloth and avoid alkaline detergents which lift indigo. A wool-trained hand wash every five years preserves the depth of the saturation. Forty plus years of household use is reasonable with this routine, and the carpet remains conservable beyond.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
