Ultramarine takes its name from the Latin for beyond the sea, the route by which lapis lazuli reached Italian Renaissance workshops from the only mine then known. The pigment was costlier than gold, and Renaissance contracts often specified the painter must use ultramarine for the Virgin's robe at the patron's expense. The over-dyed patchwork tradition reaches that same saturated marine blue through indigo over a synthetic French ultramarine top, applied to a gridded field of vintage Turkish and Persian fragments.
This 12' x 15' (366 x 457 cm) loom required five weavers over close to seven months. Around 4.7 million hand-tied knots on a cotton foundation, with each panel sourced from an older rug, cut to size, and re-knotted into the new ground while still under tension. The over-dye was struck in copper vats with indigo as the base, a French ultramarine top added in two later immersions, and an iron after-bath to settle the depth. Twelve dips spread across five days set the colour at its final saturation.
The composition
A unified ultramarine field holds a grid of unequal rectangular panels. Each cell preserves the ghost of an older composition, a stylised vine in one panel, a medallion fragment in another, a Caucasian eight-pointed star in a third. The over-dye flattens every source palette into a tonal family of the blue. Ultramarine is one of the most stable colours in the workshop, the rug will hold its saturation for thirty to forty years before drifting toward a slightly cooler marine grey.
What you are buying
Over-dyed patchwork carpets at this scale and density list with Western dealers between $9,000 and $13,000 when available. The piece is offered here at clearance pricing well below that figure. The discount reflects stock turnover rather than any reduction in materials or labour. Hand-knotted wool of this construction appreciates with use rather than depreciating, a property no other floor object holds at any tier.
The piece in a room
12' x 15' (366 x 457 cm) carries a long drawing room, an open-plan living and dining arrangement, or a primary bedroom with a generous foot of empty rug at the head and sides of the bed. Ultramarine pairs with walnut, oak, and limestone floors, with brass and aged bronze, with bone-white plaster and natural travertine. It will hold against contemporary art in primaries and against muted art in greys.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a dry cotton cloth and lift moisture with absorbent paper. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the piece every five to seven years. Cared for this way, the rug runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
