Ultramarine occupies a particular place in the history of pigment. Ground from lapis lazuli, it was for centuries more expensive than gold and reserved in European painting for the robes of the Madonna and the cloaks of court figures. In carpet weaving the equivalent saturation came from indigo doubled or trebled in a long fermentation vat. The ultramarine over-dye in this patchwork chases that older blue, taking vintage carpet panels and bathing them in indigo so deep the original pattern reads as a record beneath the colour.

Three weavers committed six months to this construction. Salvaged carpet sections from two-to-four-decade-old village looms were measured, trimmed, and seamed onto a fresh cotton foundation. The over-dye bath was indigo, fermented for two weeks before the wool went in and lifted out in stages so the blue oxidised into its final shade in air rather than in liquid. The hand-spun wool absorbs indigo unevenly by design; the variation is the signature of the process.

The composition

A field of saturated blue reads as a single continuous surface. Up close the field breaks into ultramarine, navy, prussian, and the rare midnight where the indigo soaked through fully. Original medallions, borders, and lozenges from the source carpets surface as topographical ghosts in the colour. The eye registers a unified blue first and only afterwards begins reading the carpets underneath.

What you are buying

Comparable ultramarine over-dye patchworks list with Western dealers at $15,000 to $22,000 once shipping settles. Hand-knotting at every layer. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the indigo continues to oxidise into a richer, slightly violet blue across the first decade of ownership.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) covers the floor of a long living room or formal dining hall. Indigo of this depth carries bone-white plaster, brass, raw oak, and aged leather. It supports both Indian rosewood and English mahogany. Avoid pairing with strong cobalt textiles; the rug expects to be the dominant blue in the composition.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot spills with cotton, working from the outside in. Wool conservator wash every five to seven years. Indigo is photochromic; gentle UV exposure restores depth that interior light slowly washes flat.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
