Sandstorm as a paint or textile colour usually denotes a warm pale beige with grey shadow, the colour of mid-morning light filtered through dust off a desert plain. Achieving that suspended, particulate quality across a hand-knotted wool field with a single overdye requires a base material that already has its own depth, which is why the patchwork tradition begins with vintage wool rather than freshly spun yarn. The undertones of the source rugs become the shadow detail in the new field.

The 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) carpet uses patches cut from Anatolian and Persian rugs woven between roughly 1945 and 1985. Three weavers in India worked together for around four months to reassemble the salvaged wool on a fresh cotton warp, hand-knotting new seam stitches between the patches and binding the whole into a continuous structure. The reassembled field was then submerged in a single sandstorm-tone bath, a warm pale beige overdye that the aged fibres absorbed at varying rates.

The composition

The carpet reads as a single dust-warm field at distance and as a delicate quilt of related neutrals on approach. Patches that began with ivory now hold a clean pale beige. Patches that started with deeper red or indigo grounds now read as muted putty or stone-grey. Faded original medallions and broken borders surface beneath the overdye like fossils through pale rock. The understatement of the colour is what makes the field feel architectural rather than decorative.

What you are buying

Patchwork carpets in this construction sell through European interior dealers in the four to six thousand pound range, framed as collectible textile pieces rather than as floor coverings. This price reflects direct sourcing from the Indian workshop. The fibre itself is forty to eighty years old at the moment of new sale, hand-knotted in the original Anatolian or Persian tradition before its second life as a patch. Continued use seats the dye, deepens the patina, and the carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

A neutral field of this scale acts as architecture. The carpet supports a wide range of upholstery without competing, particularly cream linen, ochre velvet, or charcoal wool. Sits beautifully under a long sofa or under a six-to-ten seat dining table. Lets coloured artwork on the walls do the chromatic work. Reads particularly well in rooms with raw oak floors and white plaster walls, where the warm beige knits the architecture together.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off; pale fields show grit faster than dark fields and benefit from frequent gentle care. Rotate the carpet a half turn each year. Spills lift cleanly when blotted promptly with a dry cotton cloth. Schedule a wool conservator wash every six years to remove dust and refresh the field. The piece is built for multi-generational use.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
