The reassembled field was then submerged in a single sandstorm-tone bath, a warm pale beige overdye that the aged fibres absorbed at varying rates.

The composition

The carpet reads as a single dust-warm field at distance and as a delicate quilt of related neutrals on approach. Patches that began with ivory now hold a clean pale beige. Patches that started with deeper red or indigo grounds now read as muted putty or stone-grey. Faded original medallions and broken borders surface beneath the overdye like fossils through pale rock. The understatement of the colour is what makes the field feel architectural rather than decorative.
