Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Sandstorm 11083 8' x 10'

Sandstorm names a particular kind of warm desert beige with the weathered ochre cast of a wind-blown dune. The colour reads as bone in low light and as old gold under direct sun. Carrying that range across a stitched-together field of older wool requires the bath to be set at a low concentration and the immersion times to be calibrated patch by patch.

Older hand-knotted wool sections were recovered, sheared down to a flat working pile, and washed clean of original dye. Two artisans worked the dye phase over close to four months, lowering each piece into a sandstorm bath of varying duration depending on its starting condition. A finisher stitched the patches to a cotton backing and gave the surface a final hand-shear to six millimetres.

The composition

A warm beige field that moves from bone through pale wheat to a deeper sand-ochre across the rug. The seams between patches are quiet. Underlying carpet patterns ghost through as faint tonal shifts. Under north-facing daylight the field reads as a clean neutral, and under tungsten it warms toward old gold. Over two years the colour will settle and the wool will polish with use.

Conservation

Suction vacuum weekly. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills immediately with a clean white cotton cloth from the edge inward. The pale palette shows soiling sooner than darker overdyes; a hand-wash by a wool conservator every four years is sensible for this colour.
