Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Sandstorm 11083 12' x 15'

Sandstorm is the colour of a working desert at the moment the wind lifts the surface, a dry mineral palette that sits between bone, ochre, and warm grey. The over-dyed patchwork process reaches that range through a long cross-dye, indigo softened with weld and walnut hull, applied to a gridded field of vintage Turkish and Persian fragments. The neutral over-dye does what saturated colour cannot, it lets the underlying older patterns rise back toward visibility instead of disappearing into a single tone.

Five weavers worked this 12' x 15' (366 x 457 cm) loom over close to seven months. The cotton foundation carries roughly 4.7 million hand-tied knots in highland wool. The vintage panels were sourced from older carpets that had already lived twenty to fifty years, cut and re-knotted into a single ground, and then over-dyed in copper vats. Walnut hull holds the warm sand register, weld lifts it slightly toward gold, and a touch of iron mordant pulls the whole composition toward the dustier mineral grey of the name.

The composition

A field of warm sand grey holds a grid of unequal rectangular panels. Inside each panel, the ghost geometry of an older rug remains legible, a medallion in one cell, a Herati repeat in another, a tribal diamond in a third. Because the over-dye is neutral rather than chromatic, the original colours of the source fragments survive as muted tonal contrasts within the sand field rather than collapsing into a single hue. The wool will lighten gradually over the next decade, and the underlying patterns will continue to surface.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a dry cotton cloth, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care, the carpet holds for eighty to a hundred years.
