Ribbon red is a name borrowed from the silk grosgrain ribbons of nineteenth-century millinery, where dyers chased a high-saturation red that read pure and warm under candlelight rather than turning muddy or bricky. Translating that target colour into a hand-knotted wool floor piece needs both a strong red dye and a substrate forgiving enough to absorb it without going flat. The patchwork tradition supplies the substrate. Forty years of vintage wool, each patch with its own colour memory, lifts the new red into something with depth.
The 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) field uses around sixty patches lifted from Anatolian and Persian rugs woven between roughly 1945 and 1985. Three weavers in India spent close to four months reassembling the salvaged wool on a fresh cotton warp, knotting fresh seam stitches by hand between the patches, and finally lowering the entire piece into a single immersion bath of saturated red dye. The bath sat slightly differently on each patch.
The composition
The dominant note is a rich, warm ribbon red, glowing slightly with cherry on the patches that began life ivory and softening into oxblood on the patches that started life with strong indigo or olive. Faded patterns from the source rugs lift into view as ghost medallions and broken borders, never demanding attention but giving the eye somewhere to land between sweeps of colour. The field reads as a single confident gesture from across a room and as a quilt of sources from up close.
What you are buying
Comparable patchwork wool sells through European interior galleries at four to six thousand pounds and is staged as a collectible textile object rather than as flooring. This listing reflects direct purchase from the Indian workshop. The wool itself is between forty and eighty years old at the moment of new sale. Continued use seats the red further into the fibre and deepens the surface patina. The piece is meant to appreciate with honest use across decades.
The piece in a room
A red field of this size carries a room. The carpet sits well under cream or oatmeal upholstery, with walnut or oak tables, and against pale walls. Brass lighting reads beautifully across it in the evening. Equally at home in a dining room above polished concrete, where the colour bounces warmth into the architecture. Avoid pairing with other strong reds in upholstery or art; the carpet expects to lead the chromatic decisions.
Conservation
Weekly vacuum, beater bar off, in the direction of the pile. Rotate the carpet a half turn at the start of each spring so window light ages all sides evenly. Treat spills by blotting with a clean cotton cloth, never by rubbing. Schedule a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every six years. The carpet has eighty years of usable life ahead of it under sensible care.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
