Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Ribbon Red 11082 8' x 10'

Ribbon Red sits at the celebratory end of the overdye palette, named for the bright satin ribbon worn at festivals and ceremonial occasions. The colour holds a clean primary register that resists drifting toward either burgundy or coral, and the dye bath has to be timed precisely to land the saturation across older wool that may have entered with any number of starting tones.

Recovered hand-knotted wool sections were sheared down and washed clean of their original colour. Two artisans worked the dye phase over roughly four months, lowering each section into a Ribbon Red bath at controlled temperature for forty-eight hours. A finisher stitched the patches together on a cotton backing and gave the surface a final hand-shear to six millimetres.

The composition

A field of clean primary red that varies from patch to patch in saturation, some sections holding a brighter scarlet edge and others reading closer to deep crimson. The seams are quiet. Underlying carpet patterns ghost through as faint tonal differences. Under daylight the red carries weight without going dense, and under lamplight it warms by half a stop into something closer to old vermilion. Over two years the colour will settle and gain depth.

Conservation

Suction vacuum every week. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean white cotton cloth pressed against the pile. Avoid bleach and strong solvents. A wool conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years.
