Red is the oldest carpet colour. Madder root has been used in the Caucasus, Persia, and Anatolia for at least three thousand years, and almost every great pile tradition begins with a red ground. The ribbon-red over-dye revisits that lineage by submerging salvaged antique fragments in a fresh madder bath, restoring the pigment to its original saturation and allowing the older dye history of each block to register beneath as a quiet undertone.
Two weavers and a finisher carried this carpet across roughly four months on a vertical loom in India. Hand-cut wool fragments were re-knotted across a cotton warp, then the body went to the wash team for the red over-dye. The base wool is hand-spun highland fleece. Madder root prepared in copper vats over two weeks gives the dye its depth; the over-dye is applied cold and in two passes so the saturation builds without surface mottling.
The composition
A continuous madder-red field, deepening into oxblood at the seams and lightening toward coral in passages where the original pile was thinner. Beneath the over-dye, vine work, faded medallions, and border fragments register in muted negative. The colour reads warm in daylight and burns slightly orange under tungsten lighting; in cool LED interiors it sits closer to brick. That movement is the signature of a real plant pigment.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted red over-dyed patchwork pieces of this size move through European auction at $4,000 to $7,500 in stable condition. The carpet here is the same construction, in real wool over cotton, finished by hand. Madder over-dye is among the most stable of the family and conserves cleanly over generations. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the red mellows toward terracotta over the decades rather than fading flat.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a primary sitting space in a flat, a writing room, or the foot of a king bed. The red palette pairs with chalk walls, deep walnut, brass fittings, and unbleached linen upholstery. It works alongside antique brass instruments, lithographs, and old leather; it competes with patterned wallpapers and strongly coloured paintings, and it expects to hold the chromatic conversation in the room on its own.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly on suction only, with the rotating brush disengaged. Rotate the carpet a half turn every six months. Blot spills with cold water on cotton cloth; never rub. Avoid alkaline cleaners which lift madder. A specialist wool wash every five years preserves the depth of the over-dye. With this care, the carpet runs forty years of regular use and remains conservable beyond.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
